Welcome to UNH Classics Abroad: Rome Teaser

Greetings to all! We are launching this new website to highlight the amazing experiences our students have while studying abroad in the ancient world—sites, history, food, culture, you name it! Since I’ve been leading study abroad programs in Rome over the past 12 years, I thought we’d start with some pictures our most recent trip—next, you’ll be getting updates from current students studying in Greece!

The Pantheon, fronted by an Egyptian obelisk, with its typical Roman temple facade but the amazing dome behind!

Pizza rossa (red pizza) from my favorite place of all time, Da Simone on the Gianicolo hill, right off the bus stop at Carini.

Meta-photo of my colleague, Nicole Gercke (Italian Studies), taking a picture of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. For those who are interested, the wide-open avenue leading to the basilica was once a closed series of smaller pathways, leading to a “surprise” moment of awe when one emerged. Now, thanks to Mussolini, it’s something of a triumphal avenue to connect the secular city to the religious heart of the Catholic church.
